  • Where are you from?¬†Originally from South Dakota, I grew up in the Black Hills. Growing up feeling closed-in and land-locked, I moved to the east coast as soon as I was able!
  • When and why did you start paddling?¬†I started paddling in 2010. Growing up land locked, I had obviously never learned to surf, always wanted to, but was intimidated. SUP was interesting to me because I could get on the water, in the ocean, and make myself MOVE on the water! Brilliant!
  • What is your favorite aspect of paddling?¬†I don’t know if I have one single thing that I like about paddling over another. The friendships and feelings of community are rewarding. I love to work out on the water more than anywhere else. For a country boy, catching waves and open ocean swells remains thrilling. Racing long distance is probably my favorite thing to do, though. All of the above can be found before, during, and after a long, hard race.
  • What is your favorite piece of Carolina Paddleboard gear? The t-shirts and stocking caps.
  • What are your favorite songs?¬†I truly can’t pick one song. The entire Kill ‘Em All album, by Metallica is my favorite song.
  • What local food do you enjoy? In Charleston,¬†Page’s Okra Grill’s shrimp and grits
  • What is your favorite non-paddling past-time? Although we live 8hrs apart, I try to see and spoil my awesome 15 yr old daughter whenever I can.

  • Where are you from?¬†Born in Kentucky, but my dad joined the Navy soon after. I have lived all over the USA and two years in Iceland. After an enlistment in the Marines I met my wife Julie at UNCW. I’ve called Wilmington home since 1992.
  • When and why did you start paddling?¬†I have surfed since I was 16 but I wanted to be in the water more than just the occasional swell that we get here. I started paddling after Anna came home excited about SUP. She tried it at surf camp because the waves were flat. We have been hooked ever since.
  • What’s your favorite aspect of paddling?¬†SUP surfing by far. I also love to race because it forces me to train several days per week. Paddling has been great for the relationships with my daughters.
  • What is your favorite piece of Carolina Paddleboard gear?¬†I love my official CPC zip hoodie and CPC winter hat.
  • Who are your favorite musicians?¬†Too many to list. Lately I’ve had “I Hold On” by Dierks Bentley and “Something In The Water” by Carrie Underwood on repeat.
  • What local food do you enjoy?¬†I enjoy Planet Smoothie after paddling. A family favorite are the $1 tacos at Islands.
  • What is your favorite non-paddling past time?¬†My wife Julie and I love to watch Jenna’s twin brother play soccer. I’m biased, but Johnny and his teammates are really, really good.

Anna Blackburn:

  • Where are you from?¬†I was born in Wilmington and have been here ever since.
  • When and why did you start paddling? The first time I ever got on a stand up paddle board was a day that I was actually learning to prone surf at a surf camp when I was twelve. The surf instructor decided there were no waves to surf so he took us all out on Stand ups and I thought it was the coolest thing. After a few months of prone surfing I decided for my thirteenth birthday I wanted a board for my birthday and ended up racing at river fest for the first time and fell in love with paddling and the competitive drive.
  • What is your favorite aspect of paddling? Surfing and flatwater racing. I’m getting better on my race board in the ocean and as I get better I like that more and more.
  • What is your favorite piece of Carolina Paddleboard gear? Probably the zip up hoodie. They are all so warm.
  • What are your favorite songs? I love all types of music. I like alternative but I also like some One Direction, ask Katie Elzer-Peters ūüėČ
  • What local foods do you enjoy?¬†I like to go to Planet Smoothie right after training. I love Epic Food Co., and Lewis Strawberry Farm for ice cream!
  • What is your favorite non- paddling past-time? The trampoline or skateboarding on my Carver Skate, it’s so much like surfing.

Jenna Blackburn:

  • Where are you from?¬†Wilmington, North Carolina.
  • When and why did you start paddling?¬†I started paddling when I was 10 and a ¬†1/2. I had just stopped playing soccer and my sister and dad were really into SUP.
  • What’s your favorite aspect of paddling?¬†I love all of it! ¬†Surfing and racing for sure, but I definitely love this sport because of all the sweet and awesome people I’ve met from it!
  • What is your favorite piece of Carolina Paddleboard gear? ¬†I love my official CPC hoodie!
